Is your feed for you or your audience?

Let’s have a little chat about our social feeds, mmkay? Because one of the main problems I hear female entrepreneurs constantly having on social media is that their engagement and reach is low, so their solution is to look at their grid and pick apart the flaws. The editing isn’t consistent enough. The pictures aren’t creative enough. It’s not perfect enough like the other business owners and influencers…. The list goes on. None of those things are the problem though. Typically the problem is that you’ve created your feed of content for YOU  not your followers. Wanna know more? Keep reading.

about those objectives

So let’s quick touch on all those reasons that you THINK people aren’t engaging, because they’re all holding you back from showing up. Let’s address what is really going on here : comparison & perfection. When we are looking at our feeds and thinking - the editing isn’t good enough, the pictures aren’t creative enough, i’m not as perfect as the other people I follow in my industry- we are NOT in any way thinking about serving our audience. We are letting our egos get in the way, judging ourselves against everyone else on social media, playing the dreaded comparison game, and giving the thought of having to be perfect even MORE power over us.

Here’s what we’re forgetting… most people are so freaking sick of seeing perfection on social media. It’s everywhere and often gives a feeling of mistrust because we all know deep down that no one’s life is that perfect. Perfect is unrelatable, unattainable, and people can sense the dishonesty from a mile away.

So when we focus on trying to make our feeds perfect, we are focused on our ego and self-judgement, not providing what our audience wants or giving them a reason to follow us. Now more than ever, people are craving to follow accounts they can relate to and learn from. Having a highly edited, 110% consistent feed with posts making you look like the perfect boss babe are no longer needed or working. I have watched so many women build literally million dollar businesses with their feeds being straight up poorly lit selfies taken on their iphone… and their engagement is through the roof. Why? Because they are relatable and providing content that is focused on serving their audience, instead of trying to portray themselves as being the perfect authority in their niche.

focus on your audience

So how exactly do we make sure our feed is for our audience and not us? We give them a reason to follow us by creating the content they want. Now, hear me loud and clear - I’m not saying to create content that doesn’t relate to you just to become some viral sensation. I’m saying to create content that still resonates with you and your business, but is focused on giving your audience the results they want. Maybe that’s entertainment, maybe it’s business knowledge, or maybe it’s just an inside look at how you live your life as an entrepreneur. Whatever it is - give it to them in a way that makes sense for you and your business, but keep it focused on serving them instead of being focused on just you.

Some ideas? Instead of posting about the epic sale you have going on (because people typically hate being sold to) share some knowledge and helpful info about what you’re selling. Share helpful tips and tricks and tutorials that relate to your industry often so they know you’re not here to just sell to them, but to actually help them and provide them with a result (a reason to follow you). And finally, create some content that gives them a reason to actually connect with you, whether that's a less than perfect selfie, an honest look at the behind the scenes in your life, or your honest thoughts on a tough topic that really gets a conversation started.

We want to show our audience we are REAL, here for them, and ready to form a relationship with them, because they are not just a number in our follower count. They are our family on the interwebs, our own little tribe, and potentially the people who will financially support our crazy entrepreneurial dreams by becoming clients. That’s a hell of a lot more than just another follower in the count.
