What's your long-term social media strategy?

Why are you on social media? Yeah, to grow your business, but WHY are you on social media to grow your business and HOW is social media going to grow your business? It’s something a lot of entrepreneurs don’t think about. We know we need to be on social media, it’s just become a standard for businesses & brands, but have you ever really stopped to think why?

Are we all just out here in the algorithm abyss, striving for more followers & more engagement, hoping people will randomly ask us to buy from us? What is the point? What is the game plan? Just stay on Instagram until it becomes like Myspace? Join every damn social media platform that ever gets invented?

That’s not a smart long term strategy and will burn you out faster than anything. This is why we need to figure out our long term social media marketing strategy. We need to know the GOAL of being on social media that is tangible & able to be measured against your business growth (notice I did not type FOLLOWER growth. I’m talking about your legit business numbers & income, not popularity). So what does this long term strategy look like? Let’s go over 4 different strategies to use social media to grow your business!

Website & Blog Traffic

If your business makes the most of its sales from website/ blog traffic (like ads on a blog post or walking through a sales process on your website), then your goal of using social media should be to get more traffic to your website or blog. Create your content strategy around driving traffic to your website or blog. Make sure your links are easily accessible on your social platforms. Create content that gives people a reason to go to your website, like sharing snippets of your blog posts. Provide call - to -actions at the end of your captions that ask people to go to your website. Share your links when you can. Creating content that entertains or gives a behind the scenes look (or even that tries to sell) won’t help you get to your end goal of more website traffic. So take a look at your content strategy and see how you can create your content around the goal of getting more website traffic.

Grow your Email List

If your business makes the bulk of its sales on your email list, then your goal of being on social media should be growing that list! Shape your content marketing strategy around getting more people on your email list! Regularly share your freebies to get your audience opted in to your list. Encourage them to tag their friends in your posts who they think would enjoy the freebie too. Break down the problem they have that your freebie solves. Put that opt in link right in your bio. Share snippets of your juiciest emails that you send out (aka WHY they want to be on your list). & even share some perks of being on the list, like when you drop an exclusive sale or discount code! Use social media to grow that email list instead of just growing that follower count.

Sponsored & Affiliate Content

If your business is making the bulk of your income from sponsored posts, affiliate links, and brand sponsorships on social media, then you want to keep your audience on your social media accounts as long as possible, so your goal is to keep people seeing & engaging with your content. A great strategy to use for this goal, is using your social media accounts like a mini blog to nurture the hell out of your audience. Give them reasons to click that “read more” button on your captions. Share stories and content that will make them want to comment. Provide them with value-added content that will make their life better. Nurture them to build trust and keep them on your social pages longer. That will create a trusting relationship, leading to more sales from your sponsored content.

Selling Physical Products

Now, please read this with caution. Yes, as businesses we are all on social media to sell, BUT this particular strategy is for those selling PRODUCTS on social media, like a boutique or a storefront. If that’s you, then you will want to use social media to promote your products in a way that makes people want to buy them! So let’s shape your content strategy around selling your products on social. & I’m not just talking about “here’s our new shipment” or “here’s what’s on sale”. That won’t make you stand out. I’m talking about truly making your audience CRAVE your products. The best ways to do that? Value-added content! Create content that educates them on the different products (selling a tshirt in your boutique? Show them 5 ways to style it). Share the benefits of the product. Share it in a way they can envision it in their own life. Visually show the lifestyle the product connects with. Let your content lead with the intention of “serving” to create more trust & authority with your audience, which will lead to higher conversions.
